Celebrating 250 Years: Stars Stripes & Swing

Honoring America, Those Who Served, and the Gulfport Community

Celebrating America, Community, and the Spirit of Giving

There are some evenings that stay with you long after the music stops.

Stars, Stripes & Swing was one of those nights.

From the moment guests began arriving at the Maria Center, there was a feeling in the room that was difficult to put into words. American flags filled the space. Friends and neighbors greeted one another. Veterans stood among generations of families. The sounds of a live orchestra brought back memories of another era. And everywhere you looked, there was a sense of anticipation, gratitude, and unmistakable American pride.

More than 250 members of our community came together that evening to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary—but what unfolded became much more than a celebration of a milestone. It became a celebration of courage, sacrifice, freedom, and the people who have helped make those freedoms possible.

As Lori Loyst and her orchestra filled the room with the sounds of big-band classics, the dance floor came alive. Couples swung, twirled, laughed, and cheered one another on. Our dance competition brought an infectious energy to the room, with applause and smiles spreading from table to table.

But amid the music and dancing came moments that touched us even more deeply.

We listened to powerful words about service, sacrifice, patriotism, and what it means to answer the call of country. We recognized the veterans among us—not simply with applause, but with a genuine sense of gratitude for the lives they lived, the sacrifices they made, and the freedoms their service helped protect.

There were moments when the room erupted in cheers and others when it seemed to grow still with reflection. For some, the evening brought back memories of loved ones who served. For others, it was an opportunity to shake the hand of a veteran, share a story, or simply say, “Thank you.”

For a few unforgettable hours, generations came together under one roof—not divided by age or background, but united by gratitude, community, and love of country.

Carrying That Spirit Into the Fourth of July

Just two weeks later, that same spirit spilled into the streets of Gulfport as Foundation Board members, volunteers, families, and friends proudly joined the Gulfport Fourth of July Parade.

Our handcrafted patriotic float was truly a labor of love, created by members of our Board and brought to life by the people who climbed aboard to celebrate with us.

As we traveled through Gulfport, we saw children waving flags, families cheering from the sidewalks, neighbors calling out to one another, and smiles everywhere we looked. Having multiple generations riding together on the float was a beautiful reminder of what celebrations like these are really about.

We honor the past. We celebrate the present. And we pass our traditions, values, and sense of community forward to the next generation.

More Than a Celebration

These events were filled with music, dancing, laughter, and fun—but their meaning reached far beyond a single evening or parade.

They reminded us of what happens when a community chooses to come together.

They gave us an opportunity to honor those who served our country, celebrate the freedoms we share, embrace the wonderfully unique spirit of Gulfport, and strengthen the connections between neighbors, families, businesses, volunteers, and generations.

And ultimately, they allowed us to continue doing something incredibly important: supporting the seniors who have spent their lives building the families, businesses, neighborhoods, and community we enjoy today.

The Gulfport Senior Center Foundation is deeply grateful to our presenting sponsor, event sponsors, community partners, local businesses, performers, veterans, volunteers, and every person who attended, danced, applauded, marched, waved a flag, made a donation, or simply shared in the experience.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the City of Gulfport, our neighboring communities, and the many families and friends who celebrated alongside us. Your support demonstrated something we witnessed again and again throughout these events:

When a community comes together with heart and purpose, extraordinary things can happen.

The Hearts Behind It All

Perhaps no one embodies that spirit more than our volunteers.

Long before the first note was played or the first parade-goer waved from the sidewalk, volunteers were working behind the scenes. Months were spent planning, developing sponsorships, coordinating details, decorating, setting up, registering guests, serving, participating in the parade, and cleaning up after the celebrations were over.

Hundreds of volunteer hours went into creating these experiences.

Those hours represent more than work. They represent people giving something precious—their time—to serve their neighbors and strengthen their community.

We simply could not do what we do without their enthusiasm, generosity, dedication, and servant hearts.

Celebrating Today. Investing in Tomorrow.

As a nonprofit organization, the Gulfport Senior Center Foundation exists to raise and steward funds that support the health, educational, social, recreational, and wellness programs that enrich the lives of older adults throughout our community.

The proceeds generated through events like these help make that work possible. They also support the Foundation’s long-term commitment to the much-needed expansion and enhancement of the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center so that it can continue serving the changing and growing needs of today’s seniors—and generations still to come.

Looking back on Stars, Stripes & Swing and our Fourth of July celebration, however, perhaps our greatest accomplishment cannot be measured in attendance, dollars raised, or even volunteer hours.

It can be measured in moments.

A veteran receiving a standing ovation.

A couple taking another turn around the dance floor.

A child waving an American flag from a parade float.

Neighbors laughing together.

Old friends reconnecting.

New friendships beginning.

And hundreds of people sharing, if only for an evening, the feeling that they were part of something bigger than themselves.

That is community.

That is the spirit we hoped to celebrate.

And as America marks 250 years, it is a beautiful reminder that our country has always been strengthened by ordinary people willing to serve, sacrifice, care for one another, and come together around something they believe in.

To everyone who shared these remarkable celebrations with us: thank you.

Thank you for celebrating with us. Thank you for honoring our veterans. Thank you for supporting our seniors. And thank you for helping us continue to build a Gulfport community where every generation feels valued, connected, and proud to call this place home.
