For one remarkable evening, the Gulfport Senior Center Foundation managed to bring the flavors, music, romance and irresistible spirit of Italy to Gulfport—and gave every traveler a journey worth remembering.
Day One: Arrival in Roma
Every great Italian adventure begins with that first intoxicating moment of arrival. On this trip, guests needed only to step through the doors of the transformed Maria Center.

No jet lag. No customs line. We had arrived.
Day Two: A Toast to the Journey
In Italy, wine isn’t simply something you drink. It’s part of the landscape, the meal and the conversation.
Our second stop took us to the evening’s cocktail bars, where custom-branded bottles of wine made the night feel like a celebration created exclusively for its guests. Corks were pulled, cocktails poured and glasses raised.
Salute!
Because every great trip deserves a great toast—and this one was only getting started.
Day Three: Bread, Olive Oil & the Art of Simplicity

Tommy’s Hideaway understood the assignment perfectly.
Fresh flatbreads paired with olive oil delivered that wonderfully uncomplicated Italian pleasure—the kind of food that makes you wonder why something so simple can taste so good. It wasn’t difficult to imagine yourself somewhere in Tuscany, lingering over another piece while promising yourself it would definitely be the last.
It wasn’t.
Day Four: Lasagna Worth Traveling For
Every Italian itinerary needs that one meal you talk about long after returning home.

Layer upon glorious layer, the lasagna delivered everything you hope for from Italian comfort food: rich, hearty, satisfying and made for a room full of hungry travelers. It was the kind of dish that didn’t need an introduction or explanation.
Just a fork.
Day Five: A Visit to the Italian Market
No luxury tour of Italy would be complete without wandering through a neighborhood market, following the aromas and sampling whatever catches your eye.
For this journey, Mazzaro’s Italian Market brought the market to us.
Eggplant parmigiana arrived alongside savory sausage and peppers, filling plates with the flavors of an old-school Italian kitchen. It was colorful, abundant and wonderfully difficult to resist—the sort of meal where going back for seconds feels less like indulgence and more like cultural appreciation.
At least that’s what we told ourselves.
Day Six: Italy After Dark
Then the lights softened and Italy began to swing.
Scotty Wright and musicians from the Hot Tonic Orchestra provided an extraordinary soundtrack to the evening, filling the room with sophisticated vocals, musicianship and energy. Suddenly our imaginary Italian restaurant had transformed again—this time into one of those wonderful late-night clubs you stumble upon while traveling and never want to leave.
And then came the dancing.
A spirited dance competition brought several incredibly talented couples onto the floor, turning dinner guests into cheering spectators. Elegance met athleticism, friendly competition met showmanship, and the room came alive.
This was no longer simply dinner.
This was Italy after dark.
Day Seven: La Dolce Vita

Mazzaro’s returned with an irresistible collection of delectables, including mouthwatering cookies and tiramisu—the appropriately decadent final chapter of our culinary tour.
Coffee would have been sensible.
Another tiramisu was better.
But as our imaginary seven-day journey drew to a close, it became clear that the sweetest part of the evening wasn’t actually found on the dessert table.
It was found in its purpose.
The Journey That Leads Home
The best trips change something in us. They give us stories to tell, memories to revisit and a greater appreciation for the people with whom we shared the experience.
This particular trip to Italy did something more.
Behind every plate served, every glass raised, every song performed and every dance celebrated was a mission much closer to home: supporting the expansion and refurbishment of the Gulfport Senior Center.
The evening was made possible through the hard work, generosity and volunteer spirit of the Gulfport Senior Center Foundation and the many people and community partners who believe that Gulfport’s seniors deserve a place where friendship, wellness, learning and connection can continue to flourish.
For one night, they transported us thousands of miles away.
And in doing so, they helped build something meaningful right here at home.
No passports were stamped. No luggage was lost. No one missed a connecting flight.
But judging by the food, wine, music, dancing, laughter and memories?
It was one extraordinary trip to Italy.
And the best souvenir was knowing that every bit of fun helped make Gulfport an even better place to grow older.
